Extra Curricular Activities
Sporting, cultural and other activities provide important arenas for boys
and girls to explore and extend their talents and self knowledge, while
also learning the skills of teamwork and leadership.
While it is not compulsory for them to participate in any of the extracurricular
activities, to do so is very much in keeping with the School's educational
philosophy. Such involvement is a most important part of being a WSHS
family member. It builds School spirit and instills a sense of belonging.
Western High seeks to promote both high levels of participation and the
pursuit of excellence by students who have talents in particular sports
and activities. As in the academic curriculum, breadth and balance is
encouraged with all students and urged to value, support and participate
in the multitude of activities.
Western High is one of Education Queensland's Leading Schools. Membership
of this elite group provides the major difference in sports and in several
other activities. Sporting facilities at the School include a playing
field, a tennis court, a classroom that doubles as a gymnasium and the
use of a neighbour's swimming pool. Ovals and facilities at Brisbane parks
accommodate cricket and football fixtures. The School also has a well-equipped
shed.
Western High carries a proud tradition in music, theatrical performance,
chess, debating and public speaking. In music, the School employs a teacher
for performance in singing, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Boys
and girls may receive tuition, or may have weekly lessons in small groups.
For the latter, there is no charge. Several long-standing clubs and societies
also operate, some of which have a distinct orientation.
